The name "Dandenong" is an Aborignal name taken from a range of "mountains" in Victoria, Australia that appear to be blue in the distance due to the hue given off by the gum (eucalyptus) trees that grow there. Many years ago we lived in Australia, where our children were born, and when we were looking for a kennel name for our collies picked on Dandenong as we loved the "blue merle" collie and we have since carried it over to our Cattery name. We showed our collies Nationally for over 25 years and have bred over 25 champions. Derek is an AKC judge and works for the Department of the Navy in Bremerton, Washington. Rosemary is a travel consultant.

We have been breeding our Ragdolls, since 1984. We have yet to breed that perfect animal, but we like to think our Ragdolls sparkle and stand out and have that sweet Ragdoll expression. Because any written standard is open to personal interpretation, each breeder's idea of the ideal Ragdoll is a matter of personal preference. We are dedicated to producing healthy, well-adjusted kittens.

THE RAGDOLL BREED

Ragdolls Originated in the United States!

First of all you should know that the Ragdoll is a PUREBRED cat. It was originally created by mating a white Persian-type female to a Birman-type male. Thekittens were then mated to a Burmese-type cat. The result was the beginning of the Ragdoll as we know today. The name Ragdoll comes from the cat's tendency to go limp in one's arms when held!

The breed was first introduced in 1965 in California and accepted for championship showing shortly thereafter. While there was originally some controversy surrounding the Ragdoll, the myths (such as the Ragdoll not being able to feel pain) have been disproved. Although a unique and beautiful breed, the Ragdoll is above all, a cat like any other!

Ragdolls are quiet, affectionate and gentle cats. They are very sociable and loving. Ragdolls are slow to mature and remain playful as adults. Full maturity takes at least 3-4 years. Neutered males weigh between 15-20 lbs. Adult females weigh about 5 lbs. less and slightly shorter.

Many people comment on the Ragdoll personality - they are not the type of cat that hides under the bed when company come. Most often they like to be at the center of family activity - making new friends and investigating smells, sounds, etc. They get along well with children, dogs and other cats. Ragdolls are inside cats and don't possess normal fight instincts like other animals. They are very easily voice trained to obey and walk on a leash.

Ragdolls are low maintenance cats. They seldom mat and require very little grooming. Their fur is rabbit like and plush. Combing and nail clipping on a weekly basis should keep them in beautiful condition. Of course if you have time to groom them daily, you'll get no complaint, they consider grooming sessions to be very enjoyable.
